CORBETT FIREFIGHTERS “HIT” THE TRAIL IN ORDER TO BENEFIT OTHERS
   
Corbett firefighters have been busy doing physical workouts by climbing Columbia Gorge trails so they can get into better physical shape. Not only will the firefighters be in better physical condition to rescue lost and stranded hikers; they are getting ready to participate in the annual Scott Firefighter Stair Climb in Seattle, Washington on March 11, 2012.
   
The Scott Firefighter Stair Climb supports the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, raising money through sponsorships, individual and fire department fund raising, as well as entry fees. In 2011 the Scott Firefight Stair Climb raised a record $930,000 for blood cancer research and patient services.
   
Last year, Corbett Firefighters participated for the first time and raised over $4,000. This year seven members are participating: Rick Wunsch, Tim Downing, Anthony Calcagno, Nick Sines, Kadmiel Coponen, Anthony Deblock, Seth Grover, as well as Nelson Rolens who takes care of handling all of the equipment. The firefighters will climb 788 feet of vertical elevation (Multnomah Falls is 620ft. elevation) carrying almost 75lbs of equipment, as well as breathing air from their self contained breathing apparatus. The climb will take place at The Columbia Center located in Seattle, Washington, which is the second tallest building west of the Mississippi.  In order for the firefighters to reach the observation deck they will have to deal with 69 flights of stairs composed of 1,311 steps.
